Bicentennial Walkway

Walking on Water: The Ultimate Guide to the Bicentennial Walkway in Airlie Beach

Walking trail: Grade 1 | 4km one-way | 1 - 1.5 hour one-way

Start & End Points: Airlie Beach Lagoon (East) to Cannonvale Beach (West).

Dog Friendly: Yes! Dogs are welcome on a leash (with water stations along the way).

Constructed to commemorate Australia’s Bicentennial in 1988 (and recently upgraded with ultra-durable, timber-look composite decking), the walkway is completely flat, wide, and accessible for walkers, runners, prams, and wheelchairs alike.

If there is one non-negotiable experience to check off your Whitsundays itinerary that won't cost you a single cent, it’s strolling the Bicentennial Walkway in Airlie Beach.

Stretching along the sun-drenched coastline of Pioneer Bay, this picturesque coastal path connects the vibrant heart of Airlie Beach to the relaxed shores of Cannonvale. Hugging turquoise waters, winding past luxury marina berths, and weaving through tropical parklands, the walkway offers front-row seats to the relaxed Whitsunday lifestyle.

Whether you're starting your morning with a oceanfront coffee, spotting wild sea turtles at high tide, or watching the sunset paint the sky behind superyachts, here is your definitive guide to exploring the Bicentennial Walkway on your next Queensland escape.

Route Breakdown: What You’ll See Along the Way

Starting from the east and heading west toward Cannonvale, the route takes you through several distinct coastal precincts:

1. Airlie Beach Lagoon & Foreshore

Begin your journey at the famous Airlie Beach Lagoon, a stinger-free swimming haven surrounded by palm-fringed lawns. Heading west along the wooden boardwalk, you'll trace the foreshore past open-air night markets (held every Saturday morning), beachfront bars, and quiet sandy coves looking out toward Hayman and Hook Islands.

2. Coral Sea Marina

As you round the headland, you enter Coral Sea Marina—Australia’s premier superyacht destination. The boardwalk runs right alongside multi-million dollar yachts, charter catamarans, and game boats. It's an ideal spot to pull up a seat at an outdoor tavern, grab a cold drink, and soak in the nautical atmosphere.

3. Turtle Boardwalk & Shingley Beach

Continuing past the marina, you'll reach the newly restored Turtle Boardwalk section spanning Shingley Beach.

Locals Tip: Keep your eyes peeled on the calm, clear shallows around Shingley Beach! Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles frequently surface here to feed on sea grass, especially during rising tides at dawn and dusk.

4. Whispers Headland & Cannonvale Beach

The final leg hugs the coastline past secluded residential bays before finishing at Cannonvale Beach. Here, you'll find sprawling foreshore parklands complete with shaded picnic BBQs, a children's playground, public exercise equipment, and calm swimming waters.

Best Time to Walk & Photography Tips

  • Sunrise & Early Morning: The light is soft, the tropical humidity is low, and the water in Pioneer Bay is often glass-still—making turtle spotting much easier.
  • Golden Hour / Sunset: Facing west toward the mountains, the walkway offers some of the best sunset views uniquely over the water, in Queensland. Watch the sun dip behind the hills as the marina lights flicker on. It's absolutely beautiful and our number one pick for the best time of day to do this walk.
  • What to Bring: A refillable water bottle (water bubblers are positioned along the track), a wide-brim hat, reef-safe sunscreen, and a camera.

Transport Options: Don't Want to Walk Back?

If you prefer to walk the 4 km route one-way without doing the return leg on foot, you have plenty of easy transport options:

  • Public Bus: Translink operates a regular bus service between Cannonvale Beach and Airlie Beach main street. We took this option, it takes less than 10 minutes and is super quick and easy. Just tap onto / off the bus with your credit / debit card.
  • E-Scooters & Bikes: Beam and Neuron app-based e-scooters are available throughout Airlie Beach and can be ridden along designated sections of the pathway.
  • Taxis / Rideshare: Readily available at both ends of the track.

Whether you’re burning off breakfast, hunting for sea turtles, or raising a glass to a Whitsunday sunset, the Bicentennial Walkway is the beating heart of Airlie Beach. Add it to your Aussie Bucket List on your next trip north!
